In the heart of the picturesque Stellenbosch Winelands lies the century-old gem of the Kleine Zalze estate. Bordering the provincial town of Stellenbosch, affectionately known as “Little Europe”, Kleine Zalze provides an escape to a timeless era of Cape Dutch architecture, exquisite wine, fine dining and leisurely days spent with family and friends.

The estate offers a variety of attractions, including Kleine Zalze’s award-winning wines, our critically acclaimed gourmet restaurant, breathtaking hiking and cycling routes, the world-renowned De Zalze golf course and our luxurious four-star Cape Dutch style lodge.

THE WINE ESTATE
Kleine Zalze wines are marked by a classical structure and complexity matched by a vibrant flavour intensity. Discernibly South African in style, they are refreshing, beautifully balanced and well-suited to food. Our wines are made according to traditional methods with minimal cellar intervention, but supported by modern equipment.

The intensity of the ‘New World’ with its full fruit flavours combines with the elegance and structure of the ‘Old World’ to yield wines of character, complexity and balance that reflect our terroir and climate. This refined approach to viticulture and wine making, together with the attention to detail and the personal touch that goes with being a family-owned estate, contribute to the ongoing success of Kleine Zalze’s wines.

WINES

1) KZ Family Reserve
These are the flagship wines in our range. The grapes for these wines are selected from exceptional quality single vineyards on the farm. Only the best new oak barrels are used for maturation and special attention is given throughout the wine making process. Family Reserve wines will be available in limited quantities and will only be produced in exceptional vintages.

2) Vineyard Selection
As the name suggests, the wine is made from a selection of superior grapes from premium-quality vineyards. The best oak barrels are used and special attention is given throughout the wine making process. This limited range provides wines with flavour, complexity, structure and cellaring potential.

3) Cellar Selection
These wines are made to be more accessible and fruit driven. They represent good value, to suit our customers' tastes. This range reflects our motto: "We make wine for people to enjoy".

4) Zalze Range
The Zalze range of wines is rooted firmly in the tradition of winemaking excellence that has been followed at Kleine Zalze Estate for decades. This tradition is symbolised on the label through the image of the tree which has been overlooking our vineyards for many years. With its various slopes and soil types, Kleine Zalze's vineyards provide each grape variety with the best possible and most suitable growing conditions, allowing for maximal expression of varietal character.

5) Foot of Africa
The Foot of Africa is a homage to our beautiful country and continent. Wines are produced from grapes that are specially selected from various vineyards. It is an easy drinking, fun, eye catching, and superb value for money set of wines.

6) MCC
An old world style sparkling wine crafted from the finest selected parcels of the traditional grape varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, bottle fermented and matured for three years prior to disgorgement. Chardonnay contributes elegance whilst Pinot Noir provides intensity and richness. A subtle pale gold colour in line with a very delicate and elegant nose. A full-bodied classical style Method Cap Classique.

7) Cleefs
Nicholas Cleef acquired Kleine Zalze in 1695, his belief that Stellenbosch had the potential to produce world class wines led to him developing Kleine Zalze into a wine estate. The Cleef’s range of wine was developed as a tribute to his vision and belief which has led to Kleine Zalze being a successful quality producer since his days of inception.

TERRIOR RESTAURANT
Terroir opened in October 2004, and has since become one of the most sought-after gourmet destinations in the Cape Winelands, placing Stellenbosch prominently on the culinary map.

The restaurant is located on Kleine Zalze, a family owned wine farm that has risen to prominence both in South Africa and internationally thanks in particular to its award-winning Chenin Blanc and Shiraz.

The setting, under ancient oaks, is both refined and relaxed, with a view over the De Zalze golf course and surrounding gardens and vineyards.
The serene atmosphere is ideal for the enjoyment of fine food and excellent wine.

The unpretentious ambience and dressed-down decor belie multi award-winning chef Michael Broughton’s rigorously disciplined approach to food.
Classic pairings and intense depth of flavour characterise the chalkboard menu of deceptively simple dishes influenced by what’s in season and, where possible, the use of locally grown fresh produce.

DE ZALZE LODGE
Zalze Lodge is the farm’s very own Cape Dutch style country house overlooking the lush vineyards and breathtaking Stellenbosch mountains. Nestled against the first fairway of the De Zalze Golf Course, this luxurious four-star establishment provides relaxed yet pristine accommodation with an array of leisurely pastimes guaranteed to unwind the stresses of modern day living.
