About James Sedgewick Distillery (Home of SA Whiskeys)

The country town of Wellington in the beautiful Western Cape is where South Africa's only commercial distillery, The James Sedgwick distillery, is located. It is home to the award winning range of South African Whiskies, Three Ships & Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky.

DISTILLERY
In 1850 James Sedgwick, captain of the clipper "Undine" and the pioneer after whom our whisky distillery is named, sailed into Table Bay and almost immediately decided to make the area his home. Nine years after settling at the Cape, he established "J. Sedgwick & Co, purveyor of quality liquor, tobacco and cigars" and in 1886 the company purchased a distillery in the picturesque town of Wellington. The rest, as they say, is history.

The James Sedgwick Distillery was named 2011's Whisky Brand Innovator of the Year by Whisky Magazine for its many whisky innovations. Led by Master Distiller, Andy Watts, the Distillery has been the birthplace of South Africa’s first fully blended whisky, first single malt whisky and first bourbon cask finish whisky (under the Three Ships Whisky label). With the launch of Bain's Cape Mountain Whisky in 2009, The James Sedgwick Whisky Distillery also became home to South Africa's first single grain whisky.
Our dedicated distillers, Master Distiller Andy Watts and Distiller Jeff Green, believe that whisky-making in South Africa has reached the point where it can compete successfully with the best in the world, and our awards clearly reflect his sentiment.

Tasting notes for Bains Cape Mountain Whiskeys:
-Colour: Warm, golden amber.
-Nose: Combination of toffee, floral and vanilla aromas.
-Palate: A hint of spice softened by the sweet undertones of oak.
-Finish: A warm and extended mouth-feel with an exceptionally smooth finish.
-Discovering the Whisky: Enjoy Bain's Cape Mountain Whisky with a dash of water which opens up the wonderful flavours or with a few blocks of ice. Make sure you use bottled or filtered water since tap water can vary in quality, negatively affecting your tasting experience.
-Food Pairings: Our whisky is well complemented by spicy foods and sweet-chilli cashew nuts.

There's no one whisky for you, there's no one occasion for it and there is no single way to drink it. Discovering whisky really is a journey. Start your journey by selecting the flavour that most appeals to you.
