The Soofie Mosque is unique in South Africa in terms of proportion and beauty. It was built in 1969 and its fine filigree stonework, scalloped archways, turrets and beautiful minarets make it a building popular with photographers. Its origins date back to 1895 when Hadrat Soofie Saheb, an important Muslim mystic, arrived in South Africa and vowed to build as many as 12 mosques along the eastern inland seaboard of Durban as he could in 15 years. Well worth a visit for the wow factor.
