Winston Churchill spent a night at the Newcastle Armoury as a prisoner of the Boers in 1899. The Armoury was built in the 1870s when there was a threat of war against Zululand – once built, it provided a home for local volunteers and those in service. It is still used as a meeting point. The building is filled with history and the public is able to view all the memorabilia.
