About Kamberg

This is primarily a farming community, as evidenced by the town hosting events such as the Annual Kamberg Trout Festival, the annual Miss Fertilizer Bag and the Kamberg Karma -three days of mountain bike riding. The Kamberg valley is described by locals as ‘the valley, which God created once he had practised on the rest of the world and, once you get here, you will understand why!" There is a simple sense of tranquility, calm and extensive open space.
The Kamberg Nature Reserve, one of the smallest in KZN, is part of the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park and celebrated for its trout dams, streams and open grassland. Keen fishermen should be sure to visit the trout hatchery to see how trout are reared.

The Kamberg San Rock Art Trail provides a great opportunity to learn about the 40 000 San Bushman images found in the Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park and how to interpret their meaning. We recommend a guided tour so you can get the best out of the experience.

History

The Kamberg Rock Art Centre is where the first South African rock art was found. The paintings at Game Pass Shelter, also known as Shelter Cave, were a ‘Rosetta Stone’, enabling scholars to find a whole new dimension to San rock art. The images from here were the first South African rock art to be seen by the rest of the world and featured in the Scientific American in 1915. The paintings are now national monuments. The Centre has audio-visual material on the San.
