About Underberg

Again, farming is the mainstay of this small town, on the very edge of the southern Drakensberg. It is part of the Sani Saunter, a lesser cousin to the Midlands Meander and extending from Loteni in the north to Bushman’s Nek in the south.
Apart from hiking and walking in the adjacent Berg, fly fishing is its other attraction. Hikes to try include the Lammergeier Cave Trail [Tel: +27 82 443 4287], Mashai Pass and Rhino Peak hike and the McKenzie’s Caves Hike.

The Sani Pass MTB Trail follows the same course as the Classic MTB ride – it’s very challenging and certainly not one for children. It’s an 80km return route crossing over the border into Lesotho, so don’t forget your passport! Because it’s so high up, the weather changes within minutes so, in addition to your passport, make sure you also take warm clothing. It’s classic ‘four seasons in one day’ terrain and you are certain to encounter snow in the colder months.
The pass is one continuous climb and the worst part is the 8km up to the Lesotho border, but the pub at the top (the highest pub in Africa) makes it eminently worthwhile. If the last 8km isn’t enough of an adrenalin thrill for you, you could also undertake a 10km plateau ride followed by the climb up Black Mountain Pass. Take note – this is for hard-core riders only and takes about five hours to complete. [Tel: +27 33 702 0330]

Why go?

For something a bit different, try a horse riding trail with an outfit such as Khotso Horse Trails. You can either opt for a full day’s riding or something a bit shorter – up to three hours – and the route will take you to the foothills of the Berg. Professional guides will take you into the mountains, stopping to quench you and your steed’s thirst at crystal clear streams before having a good canter along the plains. You can also have a refreshing break for lunch and jump off the waterfall. [Tel: +27 33 701 1502]
Pennygum Rafting and Tubing is only 6km from Underberg. Float down the Umzimkulu River in either two or four-person rafts while watching out for the huge variety of water birds that live in or around the water. There is a choice of two routes, one is 6km long and the other is 12km long. You are able to jump out of your raft to swim in the water when the weather is really hot. There is also accommodation onsite. [Tel: +27 79 074 1321
