Ulundi, meaning “The High Place”, is synonymous with the Zulu Kingdom, having previously been the capital of these mighty people. It still finds itself in the heart of Zululand, among rolling green hills and the craggy valleys of the White Umfolozi River.
Even King Cetshwayo’s royal residence is slightly forlorn although it was partially renovated and re-opened in 1984 at Ondini, near Ulundi, and its small museum is probably worth a visit if you’re into that kind of thing. The museum focuses on the Nguni people and their famous beadwork.
Its importance is highlighted by the fact that it is the place where the last event of the Anglo-Boer War took place - the Battle of Ulundi was where the Zulu army was finally defeated in 1879.
