Haga Haga is located sixty kilometres north of East London at the mouth of the Haga Haga river. It is a tiny village, but the coastline offers miles of craggy rock pools and spacious beaches. A leisurely walk is a must for any visitor and the view from Whale/Dolphin Point is spectacular. Indigenous game abounds in the nature reserve that surrounds the entire village.
Some think that Haga Haga gets its name from Afrikaans word “haak”, meaning “to hook on” in English. During the dry winter months, many inland farmers would bring their cattle down to the coast for grazing. In order to cross beaches, one team of oxen would be hooked onto another team, with the team leader calling “Haka, Haka” as an instruction. Others think that it comes from the repetitive noise of the waves.
