Middelburg is a modern town situated in the Cultural Heartland and serves as the agricultural, industrial and communications centre for the surrounding area. In 1859 Middelburg was initially planned as an ideal halfway point between Pretoria and Lydenburg. This didn’t quite work out and in 1864 the Dutch Reformed Church bought the Sterkfontein farm. In 1866 the town of Nazareth was developed there and renamed Middelburg in 1872.
Today, Middelburg is well known as the stainless steel capital of Africa as it is home to the large stainless steel plant named Columbus Stainless.
The Middleburg dam and other surrounding dams offer thrill-seeking watersports and fishing for the keen anglers. Golfing enthusiasts can enjoy a riveting round of golf at the Middleburg Golf Course.
Hundreds of people travel to this area every year in March to enjoy the Middelburg Jazz Festival. History lovers are in for a treat as Middleburg is home to museums and interesting monuments. These include the Memorial Museum, Meyer’s Bridge and the Dutch Reformed Church.
