About Bethal

Bethal is a small town in the heart of the lush Mpumalanga province. Being situated closer to the equator, Mpumalanga is characterised by tropical fruits and hot, humid conditions. Even winters are milder and warmer here than in the more southern and western areas of the country. Therefore, this area is a fabulous holiday spot for families, couples and individuals that want to savour warm conditions in pretty surroundings.
Bethal derives its name from parts of the names of Elizabeth du Plooy and Alida Naude, who were sisters and the wives of the owners of the farm on which the town was proclaimed in 1880 on a portion of the farm Blesbokspruit. Today, this beautiful farming community farms maize, potatoes and sunflowers. The fields of bright yellow sunflowers are a truly spectacular sight to see.

Bethal is also a mining community with 20 coal mines and 3 gold mines which are always exciting to experience and tour. When visiting this lovely area, do not miss the Bethal Museum. This interesting museum has been declared a national monument and is situated in the old Magistrate’s Office which has been handsomely restored to its original 1910 state. One should also visit the Memorial Square where Boer soldiers, killed in a nearby battle, were buried.
An agricultural tour is a must in this predominant farming community.
