The town of Standerton inherited its name from the original owner of the farm on which it was built, namely Adrian Hendrik Stander. The Vaal River, one of South Africa's largest rivers, flows through Standerton and provides many water-based activities.

History buffs would be interested in the Voortrekker memorial that commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Great Trek. There's also the Anglo-Boer War memorial of the canons used by South African forces during World War I and II, as well as a monument to the memory of the Anglo-Boer War concentration camp victims.
