About Badplaas

Emanzana, meaning 'healing waters' in siSwati, formerly known as Badplaas is known as a resort town, popular for its hot mineral baths which are set in the bowl of the Ndlumudlumu Mountains ('place of thunder'), between Machadodorp and Carolina. The Ndlumudumu Mountains form a beautiful backdrop to the town. The sulphurous spring emits 30 000 litres of warm, healing water an hour from the ground.

The Cradle of Life close by is known for its predatory cats. Visitors are enthralled by the feeding and game drives, while adrenaline junkies find thrills in scuba diving at the Komati Springs dive site and adjoining cave system. A short drive away is Songimvelo Game Reserve, which is Mpumalanga's largest game reserve and the only place in the world where you may see the rare woolly cycad. The game reserve is popular for its horseback safaris that allow visitors to get up close to wildlife.

The area is rich in birdlife and includes the Knysna loerie, olive bush-shrike, malachite humming bird (sunbird) and the trumpeter hornbill making bird watching is a serious pastime.

Hikes and walks in the area include a walk along 100-year old water canals to a cascading waterfall with views over the valley.

There is also a 9-hole golf course about seven kilometres from the Forever Resort in Badplaas that provides some pretty spectacular views and incorporates the natural contours of the surroundings for a great game of golf. There's much to do at Forever Resorts including water-related activities, go-karting, putt-putt (mini golf), paint ball and a zip line.

The region attracts local and international tourists all year round.

History

Badplaas originally came about as a result of the discovery of gold in Barberton. It subsequently became a major stopover on the wagon route that made its way to the Lowveld, where Boer farmers had settled.
