About Lothair

The little town of Lothair just outside the border with Swaziland, lies close to the towns of Chrissiesmeer and Amsterdam. The economy of the small town is driven largely by forestry and logging. Pine and eucalyptus plantations make up much of the lush green surrounding.

The land is worked by a community trust called the Somhlolo Trust. The Trust belongs to the Ludlambedlu community, many of whom live and work on the farms that lie around Lothair.

Sappi provides the management service whilst the Trust benefits from the timber produced, but the long term aim is to give over management to the Trust. The community's cattle are allowed to graze on the farms who also supply firewood and free building poles to the community.

Lothair is a birding paradise with lakes and rivers. This area is a great drawcard for outdoor activities, particularly those done on water like sailing, fishing and water-skiing.
