About Piet Retief

The picturesque town of Piet Retief is situated in the south eastern corner of Mpumalanga. Surrounded by beautiful plantations of bluegum and wattle trees, Piet Retief is a place where travllers can relax before carrying on with their journey to Pongola, the north coast beaches of Kwazulu Natal and southern Mozambique.

Piet Retief offers a wide variety of locations which are perfect for bird enthusiasts, one of the main reasons for visiting the area.
Fishing is another great way to spend time in Piet Retief. The dams, rivers and streams in the area are well-stocked with indigenous yellowtail and Natal yellowfin and offer excellent fly fishing that will make any angler excited to cast his line.

Heyshope Dam on the Assegaai River is one of the biggest dams in the province. Pack a picnic basket, fishing rods, swimming costumes and tents and head off for a break along the water’s edge. With a shoreline of 120 kilometres one will surely find a suitable and secluded spot to reel in the fish. The dam has a reputation as one of the best places in the country to fish for large-mouth bass, however carp and yellowfish are also found here.

Another well supported activity in Piet Retief is hiking. Excellent trails in the area include the popular Assegai Hiking Trail through stunning mountainous areas; the Phongolo Highlands Hiking Trail and many others which all range from one to five days through pristine countryside.

The Mkhondo area has a rich Zulu, Afrikaner and British history and is brimming with historical sites such as the Intombe Battle Fields where Zulu forces defeated British troops and the Voortrekker Monument with imprinted ox-wagon tracks from the Great Trek. The town’s most prominent landmark is the Dutch Reformed Church, which was designed in 1921 by the famed architect Gerard Moerdyk.

A charming collection of locally designed candles can be viewed and purchased at Rohr's Country Guest House - a perfect souvenir to take back home.
