Welcome To Bushveld/Waterberg region

About Bushveld/Waterberg region

The Waterberg (“Water Mountain”) is situated in the magnificent Waterberg Mountain Range which is vast, peaceful, and unbelievably beautiful as well as more than three million years old and yet to be fully discovered. This region is a harsh area of startling beauty with spectacular landscapes, unique wilderness, a rich tapestry of biodiversity, thousand-year-old rock art, mountain gorges, clear streams, robust rivers and rolling bushveld hills - rich in indigenous species of plant and animal life - including the 'Big Five'.

The Waterberg region is one of South Africa’s lesser known geographical wonders and the bluish mountain range supports a biome spanning over 15 000 km² and stretches for 150 km in a long arc from east to west. The Waterberg's rugged beauty, together with its diversity in plant and animal life, has led to the development of several exciting eco-tourism projects such as the biosphere reserve - the Waterberg Nature Conservancy - protecting more than 150 000 hectares of the Waterberg habitat.

The Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, formally launched in 2001, is situated within the bushveld and, as the name implies, serves as a water reservoir for this arid region. It is one of 400 UNESCO-registered biosphere reserves established around the world. It is the only “savanna” reserve of this type in southern Africa.

While the Waterberg Mountains speak of the San (Bushmen) existence thousands of years ago, the nearby Makapans Valley is regarded as one of the country’s most significant archaeological and palaeontological sites, as it has yielded hominid fossils dating back 3 million years indicating a human presence.

Apart from the spectacular scenery of the mountains, the Waterberg is also well known for its hot mineral springs – and many of its towns were actually developed around these natural phenomena, which can be enjoyed at Bela-Bela and Mookgophong.

Five self-drive routes have been designed by Limpopo Tourism to discover to explore and experience the heartbeat of the Waterberg Bushveld. These routes are centered around Lephalale, but cover an area from Thabazimbi to Alldays.

The hunting infrastructure consists of provincial and private hunting farms and lodges. This allows potential hunters to tender for a certain quota of animals and, for a fee, depending on the size of the catch, allows the seasonal hunting of animals that would otherwise be culled for population control. A set of laws clearly states the prerequisites of hunting, such as permits and the monitoring of animal species and numbers.

Many would consider the act of hunting antithetical to the efforts of conservation, but the province proves the opposite to be true. In 1997 it accounted for 63% of all hunting in the country and its 900 hunting farms brought in over R500 million from accommodation and trophies alone. This is an undeniably large industry, particularly for the conservationists, who receive direct funding from these revenues.

In fact, farmers who previously owned cattle and often had over-grazed lands are now converting their land to ecological hunting farms, which are more profitable and environment-friendly. At one such farm, rhino hunting involves the use of tranquilliser darts in place of bullets, generating money for the survival of this endangered species.

Hunting in South Africa is strictly regulated and controlled by PHASA, which established a Wildlife Conservation Fund in 1999. The fund's mission is "to establish a financial resource which will be used to assist PHASA and the professional hunting industry in its efforts to promote and maintain the wise consumptive use of the natural resources of South Africa".
As a direct result of controlled hunting in Limpopo, there is currently more game in the province than there was in the early 1960s.

Thousands of art lovers and enthusiasts are visiting Limpopo to experience the Arts Festival. On the visual arts and crafts front, Limpopo is renowned for impeccable sculptors, potters and bead artists. Most of these works will be viewed at exhibition centres for the duration of the festival.

The Waterberg region is an all-year-round destination due to its warm climate and many attractions. Summer months, October to March can get very hot however the winters are moderate during the day and chilly at night
