The Central Region of the North West Province is an area of flat, dry savanna plains and grassland that amble on for miles and miles. Although the land appears to be dry, it is certainly not barren thanks to the gigantic groundwater springs which provide fresh water to sustain the many maize, sunflower and ground nut farms as well as all the livestock in the area.
As one heads west the land become even flatter and even drier because that is indeed the fringes of the Kalahari Desert. To the north is Botswana on which the region borders. Mafikeng, the capital city of the North West, is the administrative and commercial centre of the area which serves as the bureaucratic hub that many drag themselves to for the thrill of paperwork and document retrieval.
This does not give credit to the city and its rich history. A visit to Mafikeng is not complete without a stop at the Mafikeng Nature Reserve who are saving South Africa’s rhinos from extinction through their breeding programs.
The other smaller, less populated towns in the region have their fair share to offer too.
For many, the attraction to the region lies with the abundance of game farms and parks that are scattered throughout the bushveld. Whether its Big Five spotting, bird viewing or fishing you are after you will not struggle to find a place to do all of the above. The standouts have to be the Madikwe, Botsalano and Mafikeng Nature Reserves.
- Groot Marico has the Kortkloof Cultural Village and mampoer distillery which are both fantastic experiences.
-The Barberspan Bird Sanctuary found between Delareyville and Barberspan offers a staggering variety of birds that congregate at the 2 000ha salt pan.
