Predominantly a farming region, the Southern Region of the North West is decorated with seemingly endless crops of maize, sunflowers, tobacco, cotton and citrus. It can also be held responsible for 83 percent of the province’s income.
The region borders the Free State to the south, Gauteng to the west and the Vaal River squeezed in between the southern border. This prime positioning on the water has led to the construction of lodges and guesthouses that cater for tourists who crave time on the water - whether it be boating or fishing or a combination of the two.

It would be no surprise that the Southern Region is described as a thrillseeker's dream, following in the footsteps of its neighbouring regions within the North West. Activities such as hiking, mountain biking, river rafting and mountain climbing are in no short supply.

Attractions such as the Bloemhof Dam Reserve and the Boskop Dam Reserve attract water lovers and the flocks of birds that habituate those very water bodies. But perhaps the main tourist attraction is the Vredefort Dome - a meteorite landing site that is over 10 square km in size.

The city lovers will be pleased too with Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp offering significant sights to be seen.

The Southern Region strikes a good balance of outdoor fun with an exciting array of small towns and some larger ones to suit the likes of all kinds of people.
