Dundee is primarily a coal mining town (although mining is not as prominent as it used to be) situated in the Biggarsberg valley in KwaZulu-Natal. Founded by Scottish settler Peter Smith, its name is homage to Smith’s hometown in Scotland. Dundee is, believe it or not, a city rather than a town and is characterised by numerous historical buildings with connections that go back at least a century. It is home to the very origins of the second Boer War - the first shots were fired here - the infamous Battle of Dundee, as well as the Battle of Talana, took place in the region.
Dundee is an ideal destination for travellers who prefer small, quaint places that provide unique and authentic experiences and the fact that it is surrounded by the intimidating presence of the Indumeni, Mpati and Talana mountains means its location is very picturesque.
A few hidden gems of Dundee include the Talana Museum, coal mining museums, authentic glasswork collections and the original homestead and farmstead of Peter Smith himself.
