About Umhlali

This farming village lies inland from Salt Rock and was established by English and Scottish settlers in 1850. It was originally known as Fort William but renamed Umhlali after the Zulu name for the Monkey Orange tree which grew along the banks of the Umhlali River. Sugar cane is the main industry here and there are plans to establish a Sugar Museum to give visitors a chance to see how the cane is crushed and made into the sweet treat we all love. The historic memorabilia will include a locomotive originally used for hauling cane to the mill.
