Queenstown lies at the foot of the Hangklip Mountain and is at the heart of a prosperous farming community, and is a very good spot to begin an Eastern Cape heritage tour because it was once the most prosperous settlement in the area.
It was originally intended to act as a military outpost during the Frontier Wars.
In the late 19th century, as the town flourished, large sandstone buildings were constructed along the main roads and most of these remain standing today. Many of the Victorian-era buildings in the form of schools, churches and administrative offices have remained intact.
