About White River

The small town of White River lies between Nelspruit and Hazyview and is an important farming and tourism centre, which was founded around 1890. It was settled by farmers after the Anglo-Boer War. The high level of Kaolin (China clay) deposits in the riverbed give the river that skirts the town its name. In Swazi it is known as Mhloppemanzi (which means white waters) and in Afrikaans it is referred to as Witrivier.

Agriculture in this area focuses mainly on the production of tropical fruit, flowers and timber, playing an important role in the economy of the region. Its close proximity to the Kruger National Park and other tourist attractions render White River as a great base from which to explore the region and all its undiscovered gems.

This friendly community of artists, artisans and farmers will entice any visitor with their visually appealing and inspired creative designs and fresh produce at any of their galleries, studios, craft markets, cafés and restaurants you find here.

White River is a favourite holiday destination for both locals and foreign tourists alike. Travelers can enjoy the beauty of the Crocodile River Valley, its three irrigation dams and a number of nearby forests - there is plenty to do for the outdoor interested traveler.

For those with a historical interest in mind, make sure to visit the St. Georges Anglican Church and the Mission End Trading Post which offers stunning antiques and treasures for all to view, purchase and take a bit of White River home with them.
