Around the time the Anglo Boer War came to an end Edenvale existed under the name of Rietfontein, due to the adjacent Rietfontein gold mine. It was initially populated by Cornish mine workers and became a municipality in 1942. It was incorporated into the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality in 2000. The northern parts of Edenvale have expanded dramatically in the last decade.
