This part of South Africa is named after the fact that it receives more days of sunshine per year than anywhere else in the country - on average 320 days per year. It stretches for about 500 kilometres from the Tsitsikamma in the west to East London in the east and encompasses some of the most beautiful coastline in imaginable.
What makes this area special is the fact that large parts of it remain relatively untouched by modern commercialism. There are many places you can visit and forget that you are in the 21st century. Even at the height of the holiday season you can find beaches where you would struggle to see another human being.
There is something for everyone to do here. From relaxing on endless, golden beaches to gentle pursuits such as fishing, game viewing, wine and beer quaffing to the more adrenalin-laden pursuits such as surfing, kite-surfing, water-skiing, bungee jumping, abseiling, hiking, sailing, scuba diving and many more! You will find it all here.
There are a number of excellent game reserves here, including the world famous Addo Elephant Park, as well as some exclusive private reserves containing the Big Five.
The Tsitsikamma coastline is rocky and dangerous with fantastic rock fishing, Jeffrey's Bay is known as one of the world's premier surfing destinations, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay are full of up-market homes and hotels.
There are countless small hamlets - both on the coast and inland - that hark back to bygone eras where you can almost get lost in time. Quaint, old fashioned towns, deserted roads and haunting mountains add to this feeling.
There are accommodation choices to suit every pocket and situation and the same can be said about the myriad of choices to slake your thirst or fill your belly.
