About Sekhukhune Region

Sekhukhune is a region rich in cultural heritage, offering you a fascinating insight into the cultural heritage of both the Bapedi and Ndebele people, whose history here extends back hundreds of years.,. The region is named after King Sekhukhune, a king of the Marota tribe (Bapedi) in Sekhukhuneland during the 18th century.

This area is rural with mining and agriculture being the main source of income. The sub-tropical climate, availability of water and fertile soil provides a durable and flourishing farming industry which produces citrus fruit, grapes, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, cabbage, peppers, beans, pumpkins, wheat, maize, cotton and tobacco.

The region is immersed with mineral resources like platinum, chrome and diamond deposits.
South African artist Johannes Segogela, renowned internationally for his wooden sculptures, was born in Sekukuneland in 1936.

Sekhukhune has a subtropical climate. Summer months range from 17 to +/- 30°C and winter ranges from a minimum of 5 to +/- 22°C.

Spring is a wonderful time to visit Sekhukhune because of the rare yellow arum lilies that flower in Roossenekal and nearby surrounds. Sekhuhkhune can get chilly in winter but the game viewing and sightseeing are remarkable any time of year making it an all year round destination.
