The Eastern Free State is situated in the north-eastern corner of the Free State wedged between the Orange River to the South and the Vaal River to the North. But it is the Caledon River, a tributary of the Orange River that flows merrily through this region.

It is a place of natural beauty that just oozes peacefulness and tranquillity. Its sandstone mountains rise up from the undulating grasslands, creating a landscape to be admired. Culturally and historically significant too, the Eastern Free State has plenty for you to do and see.

It has a rich history, many battles were fought, lost and won here - the Boer War and local battles amongst the Basotho people. Museums and the battlefields themselves can be visited for a great history lesson.

It is home to the Golden Gate National Park which sits at the feet of the Maluti Mountains which form the border with Lesotho. The park gets its name from the sandstone cliffs that resemble a ͚golden gate͛ when the setting sun casts its light on them. This is quite a sight to see and this area holds many attractions for those of you who are outdoorsy types.

Many bird and animal species along with famous fossils and San rock art can be seen whether on foot, via the multitude of hiking trails, via mountain bike trails or on horseback. Clarens, known as the "Jewel of the Free State", is also found here.

Clarens is a small town known for its many restaurants, local craft brewery, interesting shops and an abundance of art galleries. There are a multitude of opportunities to spend time in nature in the surrounding area, including 4x4 trails, mountain bike trails, hiking trails, fishing and bird watching to name a few.

Ficksburg is the Cherry Capital of the world and is the host to the world famous annual cherry festival. It is held in November each year and draws over 20 000 people to this small town. No visit to the Eastern Free State is complete without a visit to at least one of the many cherry farms in the area.
