During World War 1 Fochville was founded on two farms - Kraalkop and Leeuwspruit. It was named after Marshal Ferdinand Foch who was commander and chief of the Allied Forces in France. It can be classified as a mining town owing to the extremely profitable mines that encircle it. Many people who work in the mines live here but the town’s main income comes from mixed farming, that of maize and sorghum.
