About Gobabis

Gobabis lies in the heart of the Omaheke Region, and is 200 kilometers from Windhoek, and about 110 km to/from the Buitepos Border post with Botswana - Mamuno Border).

Because of its position along the Trans-Kalahari Corridor transport route, Gobabis is growing steadily as goods from the mines of landlocked Botswana are transported to the Namibian port of Walvis Bay, and furthermore from consumer goods being imported into Namibia from Gauteng in South Africa.

Gobabis is also known as the “Little Texas” of Namibia. In fact Gobabis is so proud of its cattle farming that a statue of a large bull with the enscription 'Welcome to

Birdlife
Gobabis birdlife is rich and plentiful, with a large number of species to be seen including a number of birds of prey, ostriches, secretary birds and other bird species both endemic to Namibia and migratory. Bird watching is a popular activity in this area, so make sure you bring a pair of binoculars.

Conservation
Gobabis conservation is fairly progressive, with a number of initiatives including eco-tourism and a well-run game sanctuary. Some of the biggest conservation efforts lie in protecting key endangered species such as cheetah, wild dog and rhino, and the area also is also close to a number of top game reserves in the region which preserve a wide range of animal and plant species.

Plants
Gobabis plants are varied and diverse, with a range of desert plants to be found including baobab and grasses, plus coastal and wetlands vegetation. There are a number of plant species in the area, with a large number of trees including worm-barkfalse-thorn trees. Vegetation regions include savanna, dry woodlands and forests while desert vegetation covers a large portion of the region.

Wildlife
With a large number of Gobabis wildlife to be seen including Kudu, Blue Wildebeest, Oryx, Eland, Zebra, Hartebeest, Warthog, Impala (common), Hartebeest (red cape), Blesbok, Gemsbok, Giraffe, Leopard, Cheetah, Zebra ( Burchells), Zable, Roan, White Rhino and Springbok, wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts are sure to have a lot to see during overlanding tours in this area. There is also a game sanctuary nearby which has a number of animals including lion, cheetah and caracal.
